Eye is for Iran: Israel launches Ofek 7 military satellite

The defense establishment successfully launched the Ofek-7 intelligence satellite early Monday morning. The Shavit rocket went up at 2:40 am and is orbiting Earth. A full battery of system tests are being run, with first images expected within two to three days. The new satellite is expected to provide Israel with better intelligence, particularly with regards to Iran and Syria.

"The satellite has advanced abilities, which along with other satellites already in space, will drastically improve Israel's operational and intelligence capabilities," said a senior security source. Yitzhak Nissan, CEO of the Israel Aircraft Industries, which developed the new satellite, said all of its systems are currently functioning properly.

The successful launch of Ofek-7 is a big boost for Israel after its predecessor, Ofek-6, plunged into the sea after launch in October 2004. It will replace Ofek-5, which has been orbiting for almost five years. Its life had to be extended when Ofek-6 failed.

The satellite is expected to circle the earth every 90 minutes, and remain in orbit for between four and six years. The satellite will be used exclusively for defense purposes.

Ofek-7 was developed in conjunction with several leading Israeli defense industry companies, including Rafael, and its cost is classified. The satellite weighs roughly 300 kilograms and is expected to follow an elliptical orbit at an altitude of between 311 and 600 kilometers.

Defense Minister Amir Peretz welcomed the successful launch, saying it "adds an important layer to Israel's security and it is evidence of Israel's technological strength." No word on whether Peretz watched the launch or, if so, remembered to remove the lens cap.
