A Fatah terrorist cell in the West Bank, called the Abu Ammar Brigades, is refusing to renounce terrorism and has condemned members who have in accordance with recent agreements, Ynet reported. According to Abu Muhammad, one of the group's leaders, Abu Ammar consists of "tens" of Fatah fighters.
Prime Minister Ehud Olmert last week agreed to grant amnesty to 178 Fatah fugitives and release 256 Palestinian prisoners in a move to bolster PA Chairman Mahmoud Abbas. In return, they must turn in their weapons to PA security forces and sign a document swearing to reject terrorism.
One of the Abu Ammar Brigades leaders, Abu Muhammad, slammed members of al-Aqsa Martyrs Brigades who accepted amnesty. Abu Muhammad attacked them for "neglecting the resistance and allowing other groups, like Islamic Jihad, to take on the important role of fighting the occupation."
Abu Muhammad said his group of militants has already committed recent attacks against Israeli soldiers in the northern West Bank, including two shootings and one failed grenade attack. He claimed the Abu Ammar Brigades is "working independently," although some members of his group are from the al-Aqsa Martyrs Brigades, a terrorist group responsible for numerous suicide bombings inside Israel.
Abu Ammar Brigades have reportedly said they would restrict their attacks to "only targets in the West Bank," refusing to renounce terrorism.
The members of Abu Ammar are also refusing to relinquish their weapons, Abu Muhammad is quoted as saying.
"Even if we don't target Israel, we've carried out killings in the past of (Palestinian) collaborators with Israel. What if family members of those killed seek revenge? We need our weapons to protect from such things," he said.
