Olmert rejects High Court of Justice's ruling to secure schools in Sderot

Olmert provoked waves of anger in Sderot after rejecting a ruling passed by the High Court of Justice on May 29 that ordered the government to secure every primary and secondary school classroom in Sderot and the rural settlements along the Gaza Strip. Sderot has been the target of ongoing and frequent missile strikes by Hamas, which have killed and wounded numerous residents and caused severe emotional distress.

According to one expert in constitutional law, Yoram Rabin, Olmert could be found in contempt of court and face sanctions, including personal ones. However Suzie Navot , another constitutional law expert, expressed surprise at the judge's inflexible and explicit terms, which she says do not allow for interpretation.

Residents seem less concerned with the legal nuances of the court's decision, and much more preoccupied with protecting the children of the city.

"What do you call a government that doesn't give us protection and doesn't go into Gaza to eliminate the threat? Murderers," Batya Katar, the head of the Sderot Parents' Association, told The Jerusalem Post. "We've been in range of Palestinian rockets for seven years."

Kadima MK Hermesh expressed his disappointment with Olmert for his alleged failure to keep a promise he made to members of his party in 2001 to allocate NIS 300 million to concrete safety rooms for all families in Sderot and the Gaza periphery.

"For the third year in a row, the schools will not open," Katar added. "I guess Sderot doesn't belong to the state of Israel and is not to be found on the map."
