IDF air and ground forces attacked Hamas militants in the southern Gaza Strip on Tuesday. Two Hamas operatives died and 15 others were wounded, including seven civilians.
The IDF confirmed that it carried out a pre-dawn air strike, and later ground troops were deployed to target terrorists in the area. A militant's 70-year-old mother was killed because Hamas was using human shields, according to Haaretz.
A second civilian, Ibrahim al-Shami, 40, was shot dead by soldiers when he went out onto the roof of his house during IDF clashes with Hamas militants.
A military spokesman said that another goal of the operation was to locate a suspected militant tunnel network in Gaza and to thwart cross-border Palestinian rocket fire against Israeli towns.
The IDF often conducts raids in the Gaza Strip to thwart the almost daily rocket attacks on Israeli towns. Another Kassam rocket hit the western Negev today, but no injuries or damage was reported.
Troops also detained 13 wanted militants in the West Bank last night.
In related news, 4 Palestinians entered Israel illegally through Gaza by cutting a hole in the fence and slipping through. Border patrol apprehended the men, who were found with knives and a grenade, in the second such infiltration in two days.
Military officials said that it was unclear whether these men intended to carry out an attack or if they wanted to look for employment in Israel. The majority of infiltrators cross into Israel illegally to find work.
According to the Jerusalem Post, the IDF is on high alert since Monday for militants who supposedly want to carry out a "quality attack" inside Israel.
