Staff-Sergeant Ben-Zion Haim Henman, 22, was killed while in a firefight against Hamas and PFLP combatants in a terror pocket near Nablus early Tuesday.
The clash occurred in the Ein Beit Ilma "refugee camp" Tuesday morning. Another soldier was wounded.
The Palestinian identified as killing Henman was killed by his comrades in the clash, one of several that have raged as the Israel Defense Forces seek to thwart terror attacks.
Two wanted terrorists were arrested. The two -- one a Hamas operative, and the other a member of the PFLP terror organization -- were transferred to the authorities for questioning.
In the operation forces uncovered a weapons cache containing two M-16 rifles, a number of improvised grenades and other weapons.
The Commander of the Judea and Samaria Division, Brigadier General Noam Tivon, delivered a briefing on the IDF activity, as reported by the IDF Spokesman:
"The Central Command received a security alert that indicated that a terrorist attack was being planned in the Ein Beit Ilmeh refugee camp in the city of Nablus. The attack was being jointly planned by operatives of the Hamas and the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine (PFLP) terror organizations. In light of this warning, IDF forces entered the area in order to prevent the execution of the terrorist attack. IDF forces arrested a number of terror operatives involved in the planning of the terrorist attack."
"During the activity there were several clashes at close quarters between IDF soldiers and armed Palestinian gunmen in the camp. During one of these clashes, an IDF soldier, Staff Sergeant Ben-Zion Haneman, was killed by the gunmen's fire. IDF forces fired back at the gunman who shot Staff Sergeant Haneman and identified hitting him."
Henman, a paratrooper, lived in the community of Nov on the Golan Heights in northern Israel. He is to be buried in nearby Chispin at 11:30 pm Tuesday night.
He was just one month short of completing his initial period of military service. |
