During an operation in the Gaza Strip, an Israel Defense Forces soldier, 20-year-old Sergeant Ben Kubani from Hadera, was killed Wednesday morning by Palestinian fire during a gunfight.

The incident took place on the outskirts of Khan Yunis in southern Gaza during an operation "against terrorist infrastructure" near the border fence, an IDF spokesman said. Kubani was critically wounded, and later succumbed to his injuries. The troops encountered fierce resistance from militants, who fired guns and anti-tank missiles at them.

Meanwhile, during the operation an IDF tank shell killed a Hamas militant and wounded at least six other Palestinians, among them two civilians. The IDF said troops fired on militants who had targeted them with an anti-tank rocket.

The IDF conducts frequent operations in Gaza in an attempt to combat the near daily Qassam attacks against Israeli towns along the Gaza border, and also to dismantle terrorist infrastructure and cells that are plotting attacks against Israel.
