Men in a Palestinian vehicle opened fire at a hitchhiking post at the Ariel Junction, critically injuring one Israeli and moderately wounding another. The incident marks the first terrorist attack since a suicide bomber detonated himself in Eilat in late January killing three.

The man who suffered severe injuries, a 20-year-old youth, was shot in the stomach and hit multiple times in the lower body. A helicopter evacuated him from the scene to a hospital in Petah Tikva. The other victim was shot in the leg, and managed to walk to the local police station where he received treatment.

"A Magen David Adom crew reached the spot and begun providing life-saving treatment to the seriously injured man. Most of the injuries were in the lower body. After the treatment, he was evacuated to hospital in a moderate-serious condition," Ynet quoted a Yarkon Area head paramedic, Gil Moshkovitz, who arrived at the scene, as saying.

After arriving at the scene of the shooting, Ariel Mayor Ron Nachman said the terrorist act was a "classic case" of a shooting attack.

This is not the first time terrorists have targeted the hitchhiking post -- in 2002, three soldiers were killed and 19 other people wounded when a suicide bomber blew himself up. Three other bombings were carried out at the bus station on the other side of the road, the mayor said.

Terrorist cells both in the West Bank and Gaza Strip have recently stepped up efforts to perpetrate suicide bombings and other acts of terror inside Israel in advance of the summit in Annapolis. The IDF has of late thwarted numerous terrorist attacks and uncovered suicide belts in operations in the West Bank. In Jerusalem's Old City in the summer, a security guard prevented a shooting attack after a terrorist stole his gone and opened fire.
