One IDF soldier was killed and another seriously wounded in separate IDF operations in Gaza Sunday and early Monday aimed at dismantling terrorist infrastructure near the security fence.
In the first incident, St.-Sgt. Maj. Ehud Efrati, an IDF reserve soldier in a paratroopers reconnaissance unit, was killed when his unit came under heavy fire from Palestinian gunmen near the Sufa Crossing in southern Gaza. Two other solidiers were wounded lightly. A Palestinian fighter was also killed in the clashes.
Efrati, 34, was a father of three children and lived in Beit Yehoshua.
In the second incident, near the northern Gaza town of Beit Hanun, Palestinians fired a rocket-propelled grenade at an IDF force operating near the border fence, seriously wounding one of the soldiers, who was evacuated to Barzilai Hospital in Ashkelon.
IDF troops, backed by tanks and helicopters, had entered the area near the northern Gaza town early Monday morning to hunt terrorists and destroy tunnels used for smuggling in weapons. They encountered fierce resistance, including anti-tank missile fire. An IAF helicopter gunship fired missiles at the armed gunmen, killing a Hamas fighter and a civilian, according to Palestinian reports.
Palestians fired mortars toward Israel earlier in the day. Three shells landed in central Gaza while the other landed north of the Strip. No one was wounded and no damage was reported. |
