| Sderot woman lies in shock (Flash 90) |
| |
Thirteen Qassams fired by Palestinian terrorists from Gaza Thursday morning hit the western Negev city of Sderot. Three people were lightly injured in the attack, while five others suffered from shock. Two rockets landed in a residential area and caused damage to a number of homes, one near an elementary school. Another Qassam hit the city's industrial zone, while the rest landed in open fields.
Six people were hurt Wednesday evening after several Qassam barrages landed in and around Sderot and south of Ashkelon.
Five people suffered shock and a woman was lightly injured after being hit by a passing vehicle while running for cover from the rockets.
Senior defense officials told Sderot Mayor Eli Moyal that the rocket fire is expected to continue and escalate further. "They foresee an escalation," he told Ynet. "They don't know when and how this campaign will end."
More than 110 rockets and mortars have been fired from the Gaza Strip at communities in southern Israel since Tu, most targeting Sderot, where the Color Red siren was sounded 14 times on Tuesday. Toward nightfall, a rocket hit a power line and city residents remained in the dark until it was repaired.
At least 10 people, including a 5-year-old girl, sustained shrapnel wounds. Lior Ben-Shimol, 5, was at her neighbor's house playing with their children when the attack occurred. The girl's father, Yaron, said, "I heard an explosion and saw a Kassam had hit the neighbor's house. I ran to the house and saw my daughter drenched in blood." He said his daughter had already been given psychological help to cope with the stress of living under constant attack.
The Hamas Izz al-Din al-Qassam brigades claimed responsibility for the ongoing barrage.
Since the Hamas took over the Gaza Strip in mid-June 2007 until the end of December, 475 missiles and 631 mortar bombs were fired at Sderot and the western Negev. Hundreds more have been fired in January, even before the hundred-plus this week. |
