Soldiers from the Golani Brigade's elite Egoz unit were operating to find terror infrastructure near the Kissufim Crossing, formerly the main crossing into Gaza before Israel's 2005 withdrawal, when they came under gun and anti-tank missile fire from an ambush by Palestinian gunmen. One of the soldiers -- 21-year-old Staff Sgt. Bisan Sayef from the Druze village of Jatt -- was killed and two others were lightly wounded.

The IDF unit returned fire and a Palestinian report indicated that one Hamas militant was killed and at least four others were wounded.

On Tuesday, soldiers from the Givati Brigade - backed by tanks - killed three Palestinians in the northern Gaza Strip. During the operation, the troops uncovered a three-meter deep tunnel being dug about 700 meters from the border with Israel. IDF sources said they believed the tunnel was to be the conduit for a terror attack against Israel.

Also Tuesday, Palestinian terrorists in Gaza fired six Kassam rockets at Israel. The rockets hit open areas, three landing south of Ashkelon. No one was wounded and no damage was reported. Two mortars were fired into Israel Wednesday, landing in open areas and causing no damage.
