A 75-year-old woman visiting a small community in the Western Negev was killed when she had insufficient time to take cover after a Palestinin rocket alert siren sounded. A councilman in the town of Yesha said sirens sounded seconds before the deadly impact in a residential neighborhood.
The woman had traveled to Yesha with her son to visit her sister-in-law, who was visiting from abroad. The two had planned to meet with relatives in nearby Ashkelon but relocated after Qassam rockets landed near the city on Monday morning.
The victim had been waiting outside a house while her son went inside to check if they had found the right address. Seconds after the rocket alert sirens sounded the Qassam struck a mere dozen inches from the woman.
The al-Quds Brigades, the military wing of the Islamic Jihad, claimed responsibility for the attack.
The woman sustained critical injuries from the impact and MDA paramedics alerted to the scene fought to resuscitate for some time before ultimately calling the time of death. Medics also treated a 50-year-old man for shock.
Chairman of the local council, Yehuda Madmon, told Ynet the rocket alert sirens had sounded prior to the impact. "There was the 'Color Red' alert and I had a very bad feeling. This is the first time I have run for cover from a Qassam. All of a sudden there was a horrendous blast," he said.
The deadly attack comes just four days after a mortar shell killed Jimmy Kedoshim, 48, a father of four, as he stood in the yard of his house in the kibbutz of Kfar Aza.
The lethal incidents come as Egyptian Intelligence chief Omar Suleiman was in Jerusalem trying to convince Israel to accept an Egyptian-moderated ceasefire agreement with Hamas.
Earlier Monday, two Grad rockets were fired at Ashkelon from Gaza. One of the rockets landed next to a residential building, causing a woman to go into shock. The other rocket landed inside the Ashkelon National Park.
Hamas has threatened to continue Kassam rocket fire until Israel gives in to its demands for calm. |
