An Israeli woman and two teenage girls were murdered Tuesday night when a Palestinian terrorist managed to infiltrate the settlement of Hermesh, northeast of Tulkarm. The terrorist, armed with a Kalashnikov assault rifle and an explosive belt, opened fire in all directions. Security forces arrived on the scene and opened fire on the terrorist and killed him. Three other Israelis were wounded in the attack.
Two of the victims were identified Wednesday morning as Linoy Sarusi and Hadas Turgaman, both 14-years-old. The woman killed in the attack was Orna Eshel, 50, also a resident of Hermesh. None of the injured is in serious condition, hospital spokesmen said.
The attack occurred at around 10:30 p.m. when the terrorist slipped under Hermesh's security fence. He opened fire at one of the settlement's homes, and the two Israelis inside were injured. The woman later died of her wounds at Hillel Yaffe Hospital in Hadera; her husband sustained moderate injuries.
The terrorist continued his shooting spree, firing at a woman walking outside. He came upon the two girls, opened fire and mortally wounded them. One resident of Hermesh reportedly fired at the terrorist, but her handgun jammed.
Hermesh's emergency response team launched a search for the terrorist, and one of the unit's soldiers was hit and lightly injured before the terrorist was gunned down and killed. The terrorist was reportedly wearing an explosive belt.
The gunfire "sounded like it was right outside our house," said Tzippi Kaliski, Hermesh's community director. "We all jumped, but we didn't know what to do or where this was coming from... There had been no warning [of an impending attack] or anything," she told Army Radio.
Ha'aretz reported, however, that the army received warnings on Tuesday that a terrorist might attempt to infiltrate a West Bank settlement, and residents of many communities in the Nablus area were instructed to remain in their homes.
