An Israel Defense Forces soldier was killed early Friday morning during a search for terrorists in a Palestinian refugee camp in the West Bank city of Nablus. 4 Hamas terrorists were killed after opening fire on the IDF naval commandos, and the Israeli force responded by launching a LAW missile at the source of fire.
Staff-Sergeant Roi Oren, 20, from Moshav Udim near Netanya, belonged to the elite naval unit, Shayetet 13. Haaretz reported that Oren was the fourth member of Shayetet 13 to be killed over the past 18 months.
The force entered the Askar refugee camp in Nablus before daybreak to arrest Palestinians on Israel's wanted list.
Troops surrounded the building in which Hamas activist Hamis Abu Salam lived and demanded his surrender. Palestinians in the building then opened fire on the troops from the third floor, killing the soldier.
The IDF responded by firing a LAW missile through a third-floor window, which set off a series of blasts, reportedly from an explosives lab or munitions cache in the building. Abu Salam, called "the Engineer" due to his bomb-making capabilities, and another 3 terrorists were killed and the third floor destroyed.
Palestinian witnesses said the IDF evacuated Palestinian families from the building.
After the firefight, an IDF D9 bulldozer leveled the building.
Following the raid, a Hamas spokesman in Gaza said that the terror group will no longer observe the cease-fire, Israel Radio reported.
