Female bomber explodes near bus-stop in Jerusalem, killing two
By israelinsider staff  September 22, 2004

A Palestinian woman blew up near a bus stop in the French Hill area of northern Jerusalem. Two Israeli border policemen were killed, and two were seriously hurt. 15 others have light to moderate injuries.

One Israeli border policeman, monitoring the intersection, confronted the bomber, demanded identification, and asked her to open her bag and submit to a search. She resisted, and the other border policeman approached. "At that point, the terrorist, who was carrying a bag, made a weird backward motion with her head, and that is when the explosion happened," an eyewitness said.

The policemen, 20-year-old Mamoya Tahio and 19-year-old Menashe Komemi, were mortally wounded in the blast. Jerusalem police chief Ilan Franco said they prevented a much greater tragedy.

Police said the terrorist carried a bag with 5 kg (12 pounds) of explosives as well as shrapnel to inflict maximal damage.

Arafat's Fatah Al-Aksa Brigades claimed credit. The terror group said the attack was a response to the elimination of the terrorist Abu Halifa in Jenin over a week ago, and said the bomber, identified as Zainab Ali Issa, 18, came from the Jenin area.

She was the eighth female suicide bomber, all of them sent by Fatah. In the last weeks five would-be female bombers have been caught or turned themselves in enroute to attacks.

Security forces sealed off the area of the attack and checking for additional explosive devices. Roadblocks were set up around the Palestinian city of Ramallah, just north of French Hill.

The French Hill junction has been the scene of numerous attacks during the past four years of Palestinian violence. This was the first suicide bombing in Israel since the August 31 double bus bombing in Be'er Sheva that killed 19.
