Palestinians murder female jogger and the medic who tried to save her
By israelinsider staff  September 30, 2004

A Palestinian terrorist ambushed an Israeli woman out for a morning run, then murdered a medic coming to help her on a road linking the communities of Nissanit and Ale Sinai in northern Gaza.

The woman, Shulamit "Shuli" Batito, 36, of Nissanit, was shot as she was jogging along the road between the two settlements and is believed to have died immediately.

An initial inquiry suggested that the attackers had tried to drag her body away and possibly seize her as a hostage,

Soldiers arrived on the scene and opened fire on the assailants. Sgt. Victor Ariel of Kadima, a medic serving as a commanding officer during the operation, tried to give her medical care, thinking she may have survived. However, a hand grenade was thrown at him as he tried to treat her, and he too was killed.

The remaining soldiers killed one of the terrorists who carried out the attack and later killed a second found hiding behind bushes. He exploded when he was shot, either because he was either carrying a bomb or wearing an explosive belt.

Another Israeli soldier was moderately injured.
