Israeli killed, two wounded in Samaria "friendly fire" incident
By Israel Insider staff and partners  November 7, 2004

An Israel Defense Forces soldier was fatally shot and two others were moderately wounded at around 10:30 Saturday night during military operations in the village of Ilar, near the West Bank city of Tulkarm. The soldier was identified as Corporal Tom Dekel, 20, from Eilat.

A unit from the Nachshon infantry battalion entered the village and encountered armed militants from the Fatah Al Asa Martyrs' Brigades. The two militants were killed in a firefight.

After an additional IDF force was called to the scene, the unit in the village mistook the newly arrived soldiers for militants and opened fire.

The wounded soldiers were rushed to Sheba Medical Center in Tel Aviv, where Dekel died from his wounds. The two other soldiers suffered moderate injuries. The IDF Central Command is investigating the incident.
