Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon received a report Tuesday detailing final plans for the upcoming evacuation of Jewish settlements, Army Radio reported, recommending that houses in four West Bank settlements be destroyed, but leaving infrastructure intact in Gaza.
According to the report, Giora Eiland, the head of the National Security Council, delivered the 16-page document to the prime minister. A top Sharon aide said he did not know of the document.
Israel is set to evacuate 21 Gaza Strip settlements and four in the northern West Bank this summer.
The document outlines different phases of the pullback and designates responsibility for each operation, the radio said, adding that it deals with the actual withdrawal and the legal, economic and human aspects of the plan.
The document calls on the army to destroy all four settlements in the West Bank after the withdrawal to prevent settlers from re-inhabiting them. However, in Gaza, it recommends leaving as much infrastructure as possible standing.
The government has already decided to destroy all the settlements, but recently the army has pushed to leave them intact.
The document also lays out the steps leading up to the evacuation, allowing the army to declare the areas closed military zones from next month to prevent waves of protesters from flooding the settlements.
According to the radio, the council also suggests plans for after the withdrawal, including a railway line linking the Gaza Strip and the West Bank.
