Israeli soldier killed, another wounded by terrorists near Tulkarem
By israelinsider staff and partners  May 2, 2005

IDF soldier Staff Sergeant Dan Talasnikov, 21, from Nir Galim was killed and another soldier was lightly wounded last night during an operation to arrest wanted terrorists in an open area east of the village of Tzieda, north of Tulkarem.

The soldier's family has been notified. Talasnikov's funeral takes place 6 p.m. today.

During the arrest operation the two wanted terrorists opened fire at the IDF forces around 2 a.m., wounding two soldiers. The force returned fire. Then one of the soldiers, who was severely wounded, was rushed to an Israeli hospital to receive medical treatment, and later died of his wounds. The second wounded soldier received medical treatment on location.

One of the wanted terrorists -- who was identified as Islamic Jihad terrorist Shafik Abdul Ghani -- was killed in the fire exchange, and an AK-47 assault rifle was found on his person.

According to Palestinian sources, Ghani, who had "escaped" from a Palestinian prison last week, belonged to the terror cell that had carried out the attack at the Stage nightclub in Tel Aviv, and planned to carry out another attack in the upcoming days.

Security control over the West Bank town of Tulkarem and eight nearby villages was transferred to the Palestinian Authority about a month ago. The handover was initially delayed after the two sides could not agree on the transfer of control over the villages.

Security officials estimate that the village of Tzieda and a nearby village are home to part of the Islamic Jihad infrastructure.
