"Chickenshit" protesters miss their targets
By israelinsider staff  June 11, 2005

Protesters against Israel's anti-terror fence tried a new tactic following the blinding of a soldier from stones thrown "non-violently" at a previous protest: manure-filled balloons.

Soldiers and police called to the Arab village of Bilin in Samaria (the "West Bank") were confronted with a new and more pungent protest weapon: manure-filled balloons.

Demonstrators, who reportedly used mostly chicken manure, reported the "shit missiles" hit several soldiers and exploded. They claimed the new weapon was a response to the firing of tear gas by soldiers during previous protests.

"It was amusing to see balloons exploding in the face of soldiers and police officers and drowning them in a sea of stench," one demonstrator told ynet.

But the IDF said none of the pungent projectiles hit their intended target. But the army said it views the latest tactic with severity, and claimed protesters entered a closed military zone, and also stoned soldiers, who responded with rubber-coated bullets.

About 50 Palestinian, Israeli, and foreign protesters took part in the demonstration. One Israeli was detained and hauled in for questioning. No one was injured. Many took baths.
