One Israeli dead, two wounded in terror attack on Philadelphi Route
By Israel Insider staff and partners  June 19, 2005

Palestinian terrorists with the Islamic Jihad and the Abu Rish Brigades, an offshoot of the Fatah movement, fired arms and rocket-propelled grenades at Israelis -- some civilians and some soldiers -- near an army post on the Gaza-Egypt border, killing one soldier and injuring 2 other Israelis, the army said.

Sergeant Major Avi Karuchi, 25, was the fatality.

One of the terrorists was killed.

The violence began when the terrorists attacked soldiers and civilians doing engineering work near the post with light arms fire, the army said. Militants later fired two grenades at the post, it said.

The soldiers returned fire, killing one of the attackers. A second attacker escaped, the army said.

The attack came as U.S. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice met with Israeli officials to help coordinate Israel's planned withdrawal from the Gaza Strip.

The AP contributed to this report.
