The terrorist gunmen, who opened fire on the vehicle traveling on Highway 60, shot a 10-year-old Jewish boy in the head and lightly injured the driver, who was traveling on Highway 60 just north of Jerusalem, nearby the settlement of Ateret. The father of the boy, who was driving in a car next to the one hit, came out unscathed in the attack. The Al Aqsa Martyrs' Brigades of the mainstream Fatah claimed the attack.
According to Magen David Adom, the boy was in critical condition and was sent by helicopter to Jerusalem's Hadassah Ein Kerem hospital for treatment, where after undergoing surgery, reached stable condition.
The 40-year-old who was behind the wheel continued on his way towards Ateret despite his injuries, where he was met by ambulances and troops.
The IDF received a report about the shooting around 11 a.m. Sunday and has dispatched large forces to the area, while soldiers initiated a pursuit for the shooters.
After the attack, the terrorists abandoned their car and set it afire near Jelazoun. It appears that the terrorists, acting in what security analysts can a relatively "sophisticated" technique, placed a gas canister in the car, which they intended to blow up as a secondary attack when security forces arrived at the scene of the shooting.
The AP contributed to this report.
