"Expulsion Dress Rehearsal" halted due to excessive violence by border cops

The multi-service division-level training exercise for the security forces which are assigned to evict Jews from Gaza and northern Samaria had to be halted this afternoon by commanders due to excessive violence by trainees.

The commanders of the Caracal Battalion halted the exercise, being held in Kerem Shalom in southern Gaza, after soldiers of the Border Guard units taking part were overly violent in their handling of the mock evacuees. Soldiers ordered to play the role of Gush Katif and Samaria residents were told to demonstrate "active resistance."

A journalist assigned to the Caracal Batallion reported in ynet that he heard a border policeman say that "if the settlers will be as aggressive as the soldiers, we will break their hands."

In one part of the concluding exercise, a female soldier dressed as a settler took a megaphone and stood on a police jeep. Border policeman threw her on the ground with what commanders considered "excessive force."

Disputes arose between the services. Army Captain Ron Cohen claimed that the border police response was exaggerated, but the commander of those forces disagreed, saying that his troops acted appropriately. The dispute between the commanders then spread to the soldiers, each blaming the other side, ynet reported.

Some 15,000 soldiers and policeman took part in what was called a "dress rehearsal" for the actual expulsion.
