Arab stabs yeshiva students in Jerusalem's Old City, killing one
By israelinsider staff and partners  August 25, 2005

Two ultra-Orthodox youths in their twenties were stabbed on the main street of the Arab market in Jerusalem's Old City around 8:15 Wednesday evening. One of the victims was injured critically, with a stomach wound, and died of his injuries. The other was moderately wounded in the leg. The attacker is believed to be an Arab between 30 and 40 years old, who wielded a large kitchen knife, about 30 centimeters (12 inches) long and then fled the scene of the crime, on David Street near Jaffa Gate.

Army Radio reported that the fatality was a seminary student from the United Kingdom. Shmuel Matt, 21, was soon to be married.

The other wounded victim was an American classmate. Arutz Sheva reported that both learned at the Shuvu Banim yeshiva in the Old City.

Police believe that there is a good chance of locating the murderer because of the large number of surveillance cameras in the Old City.

It was the first terror fatality in the Old City in at least five years.
