The first clash between Israeli soldiers and Palestinian demonstrators in Gaza since Israel emptied its settlements there resulted in the death of a Palestinian and the wounding of two others.

Dozens of young Palestinians marched on the empty settlement of Neve Dekalim. An Israeli tank approached, and some youths threw rocks at it, some climbed on the tank, while others stormed into the settlement, using wire-cutters to penetrate the security fence. Soldiers opened fire, killing one and wounding three others, doctors said.

Israeli official said that several Palestinian policemen on the scene did nothing to stop to demonstrators from entering the Israeli area.

Palestinian media reports claimed that Nimer Sawdoni, 24, was killed and three demonstrators were wounded. The wounded were taken to Nasser Hospital.

Though Israel has removed its settlers and torn down houses in the settlements, the Israeli military retains control of the settlement areas until the formal handover, expected around Sept. 15. Synagogues and some military bases are still intact there.

the AP contributed to this report.
