Media Report: Palestinian planned suicide attack at Israeli nuclear reactor
By Israel Insider staff and partners  January 3, 2006

A Palestinian from a Gaza refugee camp planned a suicide bomb attack at Israel's nuclear reactor in Dimona, Israeli media reported Monday.

In unsourced reports, the Yediot Ahronot daily's Web site "Ynet" and Channel 2 TV said Ramzi Salah, 22, from the northern Gaza Jebaliya refugee camp was caught with a bomb belt. He told interrogators that among his possible targets was the Dimona reactor. Channel 10 TV said the attacker was apprehended by Israel's Shin Bet security service.

The reactor is one of Israel's most heavily guarded facilities. Israel is widely believed to have developed nuclear weapons at the plant.

Ynetnews reported that Salah is facing 14 charges, including attempted murder, armed infiltration, membership in a terror group, conspiring to carry out a crime, and receiving banned military training. According to the indictment, he was a party to numerous terror attack plans, including one where he was supposed to blow himself up at the Dimona reactor. Another plan called for Salah and other suicide bombers to detonate themselves simultaneously in several Israeli cities.

In another report, Channel 10 said Israel is considering moving the airport in its southernmost city, the resort of Eilat, because of security threats from al-Qaida. The airport is in the middle of the city, where Israel's border is close to the Jordanian port of Aqaba and Saudi Arabia.

Several months ago a rocket fired in Aqaba exploded in Eilat. Al-Qaida claimed responsibility, but it appeared that the target was Aqaba, not Eilat. Several other rockets exploded in the Jordanian port.

The unsourced Channel 10 report said the Eilat airport might be moved to the Uvda air base in the Negev desert, away from the border. The Uvda airfield already handles overflow from the tiny Eilat airport.

The AP contributed to this report.
