Israeli troops killed two Islamic Jihad terrorists, including the group's top leader in the West Bank, during a shootout that erupted during an arrest raid, according to the army and Palestinian officials.
The army said the troops surrounded a house in a village outside Jenin when gunfire broke out.
Among the dead was Nidal Abu Saada, Islamic Jihad's West Bank leader, said members of the violent group.
Israeli military officials confirmed Abu Saada was one of the most senior targets in the northern West Bank, a stronghold of Palestinian militants. They said he was involved in all seven suicide bombing attacks carried out by Islamic Jihad over the past year.
The army has arrested dozens of terrorists in almost daily raids in response to the attacks.
An Islamic Jihad leader in Gaza, Abu Walil, threatened revenge. "Our retaliation will be in the depth of the Zionist entity and will include launching rockets into Zionist targets from Gaza, and we will attack the Zionist enemy everywhere," he said.
At nightfall, a rocket fired from Gaza exploded inside Israel. The military said no one was hurt and there was no damage.
The AP contributed to this report.
