American teen wounded in April bombing in Tel Aviv dies
By Associated Press  May 14, 2006

An American teen died Sunday from injuries sustained in a suicide bombing in Tel Aviv last month, doctors said.

Daniel Wultz, 16, of Weston, Fla., is to be flown home for burial on Monday, said Yael Tzuberi, a spokeswoman for the Tel Aviv Medical Center, where he was hospitalized.

Wultz and his father, Tuly, were having lunch at a Tel Aviv restaurant April 17 when a Palestinian suicide bomber detonated 5 kilograms (over 10 pounds) of explosives. Eleven people, including Daniel Wultz, died as a result of the attack.

Daniel Wultz had arrived at the hospital still bleeding and in critical condition, with serious wounds to his abdomen and a leg.

After the bleeding was brought under control, doctors removed Daniel's spleen and a kidney and treated the leg. Wultz opened his eyes at one point about two weeks ago but his condition remained critical, deteriorating in recent days, said the head of the intensive care unit at the hospital, Patrick Sorkin.

During treatment, Wultz received 200 units of blood. In part due to the many transfusions and to the seriousness of his condition, Wultz contracted an infection, Sorkin said, and he was hooked up to a life support system.

"Unfortunately none of this helped and he died today," Sorkin said.

Thirty-one of Wultz's schoolmates flew to Israel earlier this month for a special prayer service.

Tuly Wultz, who suffered a leg wound in the attack, said at the service that he and Daniel had managed to exchange a few words right after the blast, despite the severity of his son's wounds.

"I held his hand and told him I loved him. He said he loved me," Tuly Wultz said.

The family did not immediately comment Sunday.

Back home in Weston, Rabbi Yisroel Spalter of Chabad Lubavitch synagogue said a memorial service would be held Tuesday at the synagogue.

"This is just total shock," said the rabbi who has known the family for nine years. "We're all so broken. Our hearts go out to the family. We'll have to do something to remember Daniel," he told The Associated Press.

Daniel Wultz had become engrossed in Judaism in recent months, Spalter said, and had become observant in recent months.

"He was a very, very spiritual boy," Spalter said. "He used to ask me many questions of how to live as a Jew. He just ate it up."
