Palestinian militants fired about 10 rockets at Israel from the Gaza Strip early Sunday, critically injuring one Israeli and nearly hitting a college in the southern Israel town of Sderot, the army and rescue service said.
The life of the wounded Israeli man was in danger, said a spokeswoman for the Barzilai hospital in southern Israel, Noa Rosolio.
Militants affiliated with the Palestinians' ruling Hamas party took responsibility for nearly all of the rocket attacks, saying they would continue until residents of Sderot evacuated the town in fear. The barrages came after Israel was blamed for killing eight Palestinian civilians Friday on a Gaza beach in a shelling.
Hamas had largely maintained a 16-month cease-fire with Israel until Saturday, when it began firing rockets against Israel. The Hamas rockets are considered more accurate than those fired by other groups almost daily since Israel withdrew from the Gaza Strip in September.
"We have decided to make Sderot a ghost town," said a spokesman for Hamas who gave his name as Abu Ubeideh. "We are not going to stop launching our rockets until they leave."
Ubeideh said that, since dawn Sunday, the group had launched nine rockets at Israel. The Israeli army said 10 had fallen in Israel. The rockets are inaccurate and rarely cause casualties.
Since the Gaza shelling, Israel has suspended artillery fire against suspected rocket operations.
