Security Cabinet approves creating "security zone" in northern Gaza

Israel's Security Cabinet approved Wednesday a deeper military incursion into the Gaza Strip after Palestinian militants fired a rocket at a major Israeli city, an official at the meeting said.
The Israeli army will take over parts of northern Gaza and create a "security zone" in the area, a government official said Wednesday, indicating the military will partially reoccupy the area it pulled out of last summer.
The official, who spoke on condition of anonymity because an official statement has not been released, said the security zone would be aimed at preventing Palestinian militants from firing rockets at Israeli towns and cities. But another senior official who attended the meeting said Israel would not be reoccupying parts of Gaza.
Ground troops entered Gaza last week after Palestinian militants captured an Israeli soldier.
