13 Katyusha rockets landed on the port city and its northern suburbs shortly after 11 am Sunday. Two people have been killed and fourteen wounded in the salvos. One rocket reportedly his a "sensitive" facility in the port area. Injuries were reported on early rocket his in the town of Carmiel. Sirens were heard the first time in the towns of Zichron Yaakov and Benyamina, twenty miles south of Haifa.
One person is reported seriously wounded and four were moderately wounded in the attack. The rest were lightly wounded or suffering from shock.
A rocket that hit a car was responsible for one of the deaths; the other person died when a rocket struck a carpentry shop in a northern suburb of the town.
An empty house in Nesher was also directly hit by a rocket, setting it on fire.
Warning sirens were also sounded in Zichron Yaakov and Benyamina.
Sunday morning, five rockets also landed in Karmiel in the central Galilee, leaving two people lightly wounded and several others in shock.
Haifa residents had stayed away from work since last week, when eight people were killed in a missile attack on a train maintenance depot in the city center. However, they were told they could return to work Sunday if their workplace had a secure bomb shelter.
One person was killed in a factory and another was killed when a rocket slammed into a major road in Haifa on Sunday morning. Police said the rocket sprayed a car with shrapnel and the wounded driver crashed into a guardrail, which killed him. Television footage showed a white car with its hood smashed in and its windshield and driver's side door peppered with holes.
While rescue workers were clearing the scene a new siren went off, sending them scrambling to take cover next to a rocky hill along the side of the road.
Another rocket slammed into a vacant apartment in a building, sending black smoke billowing off the roof.
The blast blew open the door of the building's basement, where Dolly Marom, 40, was with her 12 and 13 year old children, who burst out crying.
"It could kill us and that's it, and we did nothing to anyone," she said. "They're talking about the bombing in Beirut, they should see what happened in my house."
Shaul Feldman, whose three-story home was badly damaged by a Katyuasha in the town of Nesher, said he remains opposed to the fighting. On Saturday, he had attended a demonstration by pacifists in Tel Aviv.
In an interview with Channel 10 TV, he said of the offensive won't end the threat posed by Hezbollah. "We are only sowing the seeds of the next war. This is not a solution," Feldman said.
With the attacks Sunday, a total of 17 people have been killed by Hezbollah rockets fired over the past two weeks, and 19 Israel soldiers were killed in fighting in Lebanon.
Speaking before the weekly Cabinet meeting, Prime Minister Ehud Olmert said the government would discuss ways to help the residents of northern Israel, thousands of whom have been living in bomb shelters since the fighting in Lebanon started.
