Just after noon Tuesday, Haifa was hit by a massive salvo of 16-20 Katyusha rockets hitting 7 inhabited sites, some of which hit residential buildings and a bus. One rocket landed within 100 yards of Ramban hospital. Most casualties are light to moderate.
Dozens of rockets also hit Nahariya and Acco and cities throughout the Galilee: more than 80 in all.
Rockets hit the Arab town of Mrar, killing the 15-year-old girl and injuring three others, one seriously and one moderately, medics said.
The teenager, Daa Abbas, was killed when the Katyusha struck her family's apartment in a direct hit. Her 30-year-old brother was seriously wounded and her 12-year-old sister suffered light injuries. 20 other people in the town were treated for shock and light injuries. A nearby mosque was also damaged in the attack.
Abbas was remembered by a neighbor as "a lovely girl, and cute. She always loved helping out." A Katyusha hit the Abbas home while Daa sat watching television with her mother and 17-year-old brother. "The rocket came in through the living room ceiling, went straight through the floor and into the TV room, and hit Daa," her uncle Ahmed Abbas said.
The port city of Haifa was also hit and at least five people were injured there, one seriously and two moderately, they said.
One Haifa man died of a heart attack after a rocket landed near his home, medics said. Israel Radio said the man was running toward a bomb shelter when he collapsed.
Rockets also hit the towns of Kiryat Shemona, Nahariya, Tiberias, Acre and Safed.
One of the rockets hit a Haifa bus and another hit an apartment building, Israeli TVs reported. Two of the rockets hit very close to a Haifa hospital, doctors told Channel 10 TV. Police told Israeli media that about 16 rockets fell in the Haifa area.
One rocket hit a Haifa city bus but only the driver was on board at the time. Puddles of blood were seen on the front steps leading up to the driver's seat and witnesses said he was seriously hit. The windshield was hit by shrapnel and windows were blown out.
The house that was hit suffered heavy damage but no one was seriously hurt in that rocket attack, witnesses told the TV.
Haifa Mayor Yona Yahav told the TV that residents had felt free to leave bomb shelters since rockets had not fallen all day.
A total of 18 Israeli civilians have been killed in Hezbollah rocket attacks. The Lebanese militia has fired hundreds of rockets on Israel since Israel launched a military campaign in Lebanon in response to a Hezbollah border attack.
