Hezbollah guerrillas exchanged heavy fire Tuesday with Israeli soldiers in the south Lebanese village of Ayta a-Shab, with three soldiers and six Hezbollah fighters killed.
The guerrillas fired anti-tank rockets at troops in a house in the village, the army said.
Meanwhile, according to the Jerusalem Post, several Hezbollah-fired Katyusha rockets landed in open territories in Nahariya on Tuesday morning. No one was wounded and no damage was reported.
The IDF reported that ground forces had taken up positions in the southern Lebanese town of A-Taybe and were carrying out operations in Al-Adaysa and Rav a-Taltin, west of Metulla. Officials said that the above-mentioned towns were being used as Katyusha rocket launching sites.
Israeli Defense Minister Amir Peretz says that Israel will target every vehicle carrying weapons from Syria into Lebanon, but is not trying to provoke a war with Syria.
"There is no plan to initiate a war with Syria," Peretz said. "We are closely following what is happening there. We will target every vehicle carrying weapons from Syria into Lebanon, but there is no intention to open a new front with Syria."
Israel has repeatedly accused Syria of allowing Iranian-made weapons to be shipped through its territory to Hezbollah guerrillas in Lebanon. However, Israeli leaders have reiterated they don't want to draw Syria into the fighting.
Haim Ramon, a senior Israeli Cabinet minister, accused Syrian President Bashar Assad of being "an aide to Hezbollah."
"He (Assad) is daily sending trucks full of weapons to help the Hezbollah," Ramon told Israel's Army Radio.
The AP contributed to this report.
