Hezbollah rocket attacks on northern Israel killed seven people on Thursday, Israeli police said. Dozens of other people, including children, were also injured, rescue officials said.
The deaths occurred Thursday afternoon when a massive rocket barrage pounded northern Israel. Four people were killed in Acre and three in Maalot-Tarshish. The seven killed marked the most fatalities in a single day since eight people were killed July 16 when a rocket struck a train maintenance depot in Haifa.
According to MDA, the Acre attack left two people critically wounded, one moderately and four lightly wounded. In all, at least 13 people were moderately or seriously injured.
In Acre, the rocket hit people who were standing on their balcony, Mayor Shimon Lankry told Israel's Channel 2 Television. The two people in Maalot were killed when a rocket them in an open field, police said.
Also on Thursday three Israeli soldiers were killed in fighting in Lebanon, the army said.
The two soldiers were killed instantly when an anti-tank rocket hit their tank in during fighting the army said. Another soldier was seriously wounded, and later died of his wounds.
A total of 150 rockets were fired at northern Israel on Thursday within 90 minutes during the deadly barrage and air raid sirens rang out across northern Israel.
Rockets also hit Kiryat Shmona, Nahariya and the Golan Heights, the Jerusalem Post reported.
The earlier barrage Thursday was fired at about 2:00 a.m., marking the first time Hizbullah had fired on Israel at night since the start of the conflict. There were no reports of casualties or damage from that attack.
The AP contributed to this report.
