An Israeli airstrike blew up a house in the southern Gaza city of Khan Younis early Wednesday, killing two people and wounding at least four people, officials said.
The attack completely destroyed the house, crushing two people to death and wounding four neighbors, hospital officials said.
The IDF said the house was used as a weapons storehouse by militants and that the residents were warned to leave before the strike.
However, neighbors said residents of the house had apparently ignored the warnings.
Hundreds of people gathered at the site as rescue workers dug amid the rubble and underlarge concrete blocks, pulling out two badly magled bodies.
The house belonged to Hassan Shaath, a local leader for the Al Aqsa militant group, but he was not among the casualties, family members said.
They identified the two dead men as Ibrahim Shaath, also an Al Aqsa member, and his father Ha'assan. They were cousins of the owner.
In a separate incident on Tuesday, the army said it shot two armed Palestinians trying to infiltrate Israel from Gaza. It later turned over the body of one dead militant, Palestinian security officials and rescue service workers said.
Israel launched a large scale offensive in Gaza on June 25 after Hamas-linked militants tunneled under the border, killing two soldiers and capturing another, Cpl. Gilad Shalit.
The AP contributed to this report.
