Hamas member killed near northern West Bank town of Qalqiliya
By Israel Insider staff and partners  October 4, 2006

Masked men killed a local Hamas leader before dawn Wednesday as he set out for morning prayers at a mosque in the village of Hableh near the northern West Bank Palestinian town of Qalqiliya, witnesses said.

The vehicle, said the witnesses, had an Israeli license plate. The Israeli army denied it was involved in the shooting in the town of Hable, which followed several days of deadly violence between Hamas and the rival Fatah Party. It was not clear who was responsible for the shooting.

Family members identified the dead man as Mohammed Odde, 37, a local political leader from Hamas. They said Odde left his home at 4:30 a.m. to pray at a nearby mosque, and shortly after, he was shot dead. Witnesses said they saw a vehicle fleeing with three masked gunmen inside.

Odde died on the way hospital, ambulance workers said.

On Tuesday, Fatah's Al Aqsa Martyrs Brigades in the West Bank threatened to assassinate senior Hamas leaders, though it later reversed the call, encouraging gunmen to turn their weapons on Israel instead.

The AP contributed to this report.
