insider web log 08.30.04 : Oh What A Wonderful Country
By Jacob Shwirtz  August 30, 2004

Our Israel's Day feature is experimental. Especially this week. We welcome your feedback and story suggestions.

I'd like to form today's web log out of a few stories that I feel deserve more attention than they received. Here, out of the cracks and between the lines are some interesting stories that helped me gain perspective on the complex issues faced by Israel:

Iran tested upgraded warhead on medium-range Shihab-3 missile
Improvements to new Shihab-3 missile believed to make the warhead, which may be chemical, more durable and may extend missile's range.

Now that more than just the "Zionist Entity" is being threatened, maybe Europe will pay more attention to the coercion caused by long-range Iranian missiles. Or will they? Can Israel really be expected, yet again, to save the world from a dangerous terrorist state?

Lone Soldiers
It's dangerous and difficult. So why would North American kids want to serve in the IDF? In the second of a two part article, some 'lone soldiers' explain why they're here.

Israel is a wonderful, hopefully never-ending experiment in world history. An entire people have organized to defend themselves against the many that wish them harm. Imagine moving to the other side of the world to willingly and passionately join the army of a country you aren't a citizen of! The thought just doesn't seem to process. Yet that's what many volunteers come to Israel to do - defend the country with their sweat, blood and bodies. I don't see people running off to join the Irish army (no offense).

Israel plans to give Christian tourists 'pilgrimage certificates'
Christian pilgrims to Israel will soon be granted religious certificates by the Ministry of Tourism, as part of a new initiative to increase Christian tourism to the Holy Land.

It is nice to know that Israel has at least some friends around the world. I get annoyed by Israelis, Diaspora Jews and non-Jews thinking of Israel as just a Jewish state. Sure, it is Jewish, we get the point. But almost 20% of the population is not Jewish, plenty of tourists aren't Jewish and Israel is not and should not just be about Jews. Now, if only the rest of the world could be just about Jews....
