A trojan attack corrupted our database (lucky we back everything up), but the breaches proved a blessing in disguise -- a kick in the britches to roll out an edgy concept in content and comment sharing, a new sort of community we call a "megazine" and a "debating society." It's still rough around the edges, but we think our readers will enjoy being members, seeing each other's faces and interacting more meaningfully. By application only.
The community, based on the robust Ning social platform, is full of member generated content -- photos, videos, blogs and content. Everyone gets a profile and can make friends. There are many interesting "widgets" and feeds that pull in content from all over the place, including all of the other English and Hebrew news sources -- all in a very cool, well-organized manner.
I am not going to say much now except the usual disclaimer that this is a very soft launch of a beta product that is full of rough edges. But you gotta start somewhere, and we think this will prove to be a friendlier, more exciting, and more enriching place to get together with other people who care about Israel, even if they don't necessarily agree with you.
A last note for the moment: the existing Israel Insider isn't going away in terms of its fundamental structure, content, and design -- that has endured well for seven plus years. We're just upgrading everything around it with lots more media and opportunities for interaction. We you will find it as exciting as we do.
