Seeing current events unfold in Israel is like watching a roller coaster train careening out of control with no way to brake. Rational people understand what lies at the end of the ride -- mangled metal, death and destruction. Israel's leaders are the incompetent and corrupt operators hurtling their citizens toward a national abyss.
Israel's national disaster-in-the-making is the result of the abject failures of each and every policy which emanated from the Oslo Peace Accords. The results of these capitulations and national betrayals can be observed daily as Arabs fire rockets into Israel from atop the destroyed ruins of Jewish communities to terrorize and kill Israel's Jews, while Israel's leaders do precious little, besides prattling and making pinprick strikes.
Perversely, it was from this unprecedented Jewish self-destruction during the Gush Katif expulsion that Nasrallah learned the methods to bring Israel to its knees and to get the mighty IDF to dance to its tunes. He extrapolated that the Achilles heel of Israel's ruling elite was their guilt in reclaiming the Jewish homeland, and their inability to harm innocent Arab 'civilians' even as the expense of their own civilians. He understood that Israel's destruction starts from within.
The main mission of the Islamic terror groups was internalized: use terror tactics to nudge Jews enough to reveal their own weakness.
Kidnap and murder soldiers to demoralize.
Lob some rockets to terrorize and kill civilians
Ignore the toothless threats and inadequate reprisals.
Call for a 'ceasefire' and watch the Jews concede and agree.
Watch the Jews fight among themselves and flee from their homes.
Citizens run for their lives, army heads sputter non-strategies, and non-leaders scurry for political cover. The same lessons and the same tactics are memorized by Hamas, Fatah, and the other terror squads encircling Israel and infiltrating her with the arms she and her allies provided or paid for.
Look at Lebanon. Barak, the most decorated war hero in Israeli history, fled with his tail between his legs. Sharon wagged his meaty fingers at Hizbullah terrorists, but turned blind eyes and deaf ears to their entrenchment. Olmert fled from the Hizbullah under cover of a UN resolution.
The Olmert regime (as did its predecessors) surely understood that its Jewish citizens would eventually pay the price for their own betrayals. But they went ahead anyway, fleeing like thieves in the night without accomplishing any goals except flight itself.
Amidst this chaos Israel's leaders can only grasp their seats. The southern part of Israel is becoming a no-go zone, a symptom of a failed state unable or unwilling to defend its citizens, for doing so might mean abandoning crumbs they receive from international poohbahs in exchange for each Israeli 'concession.' Doing so would also mean they lose all perks and access to gentile power circles.
Israel has never lacked external haters. From the hostile perches of the UN, to the unhallowed halls of European capitals, to the cesspools of Arab countries, to a boycotting academia, to a mostly vicious media, there are many who would like to see it disappear.
What's new, since Oslo, is a lack of Israeli self-respect, replaced by self-contempt. While any national leader can cite pressures from friends and foes alike to rationalize their policies -- 'what I see from here you cannot see from there' -- there is no excuse for a national sell-out. If thousands of citizens are now fleeing from Sderot because nothing has been done for years to protect them, and the government itself turned thriving Jewish communities into the launch zones for strikes on Jews, whose fault is that? Who will pay the price for that?
Slapped down in Lebanon and by the Winograd commission, Olmert won't use force if the result is harm to Arab 'civilians' and criticism from within and without. But is there any other nation in the world which would allow its citizens to be rocketed, killed and terrorized to protect an enemy using 'civilians' as human shields?
The litmus test must therefore be the following -- if Israel's leaders don't want to go down in history as those who lost Zion forever, they will have to do better than mouth platitudes and pretend that all is well, except for those annoying 'qassams.' They must admit loudly and clearly from atop the podium of the Knesset, in conversations to every foreign leader, while addressing every media outlet, and especially to their own beleaguered citizens, that Sderot and its surrounding communities are a battle we must fight and win.
For if Israel's derelict leadership do not concede to the alarm bells today, they will soon find Tel Aviv in flames. The Arabs have declared war. Iran's mad mullahs are watching and waiting. The Gazans and their paymasters, and the West Bankers too, will aim for every Israeli city and town. They will escalate the potency of terror weapons without limit. They will not stop till Jerusalem and Tel Aviv are conquered, and the Jews are made to flee into exile, the rats first.
Israel's deaf, dumb and blind leaders have compromised our homeland at each juncture. The nation cannot afford inexperienced and incompetent leaders to use the country as a guinea pig for their on-the-job "training." Will it take the rocketing of Tel Aviv for them to hear the cries of Sderot's citizens? Or will they pretend that the screams come from folks just having fun on a Luna Park ride?
