Howard Rieger: you must go further to hold Israeli leaders accountable

In yesterday's YNet News audio clip, Howard Rieger, President of United Jewish Communities (UJC - the Jewish Federation network in the U.S. and Canada), was asked, "What's the most pressing issue right now being dealt with, or being tackled by, the UJC?"

Mr. Rieger responded: "The one issue 'round the work that we're doing in Israel, trying to do the best job we can responding to the emergency and its aftermath and looking at the ways to rebuild infrastructure, even build infrastructure in places where it was insufficient. The other piece that I would add around the Government issue that frankly creates a little bit of a frustration is we were engaged on Day 1 of this second emergency confronting the fact that we had bomb shelters that weren't fully outfitted. Ok, so it made sense in regard to the fact that those threats hadn't existed in quite that way, but we're still confronting bomb shelters that aren't outfitted properly in Sderot that's been under fire for seven years, and a year after this latest emergency, and you know we just wish there were ways to be able to separate here where does Government money belong, where does our philanthropic dollar belong, and where is it going to make that biggest impact."

Mr. Rieger, I hope that means UJC will fund the purchase and delivery of several hundred air raid shelters for the Jews of Sderot ( www.operationlifeshield.com)! After all, " It is UJC's mandate to offer meaningful support in times of need..." UJC has a moral and fiduciary obligation to help the Jews in Sderot.

It is a true shame that Howard Rieger is experiencing only "a little bit of a frustration" with the Israeli Government; he should be seething mad at the Israeli leaders. He should also be deeply ashamed of them, and extremely fearful that their relative silence in "response" to the daily rocket attacks by Arab terrorists spells the end of Israel's will to survive. No other nation in the world would endure even one rocket attack, no less hundreds of them, without retaliating with conviction and full force against its enemy. When are Mr. Rieger and the other mainstream Jewish leaders in North America going to speak out against the Israeli Government's suicidal folly?
