In Damascus, President Bashar Assad was sworn in Tuesday for a second, seven-year term in office. I like Syria's bluntness. Asad was the only candidate in the ballots. He won fair and square.
In Israel, to elect the President for seven more years, it's more complicated. The powers that be had to create a scandal to remove the unwanted president. Once he resigned (Katzav was his name-o), charges were then dropped. Turns out there wasn't really a case, but the newspapers and TV went along for the ride.
Then they bribed the always-prostituted party of Shas (the so-called religious Sephardic torah guardians) which has been accepting blood money since the 'golden days' of Oslo. With them in his pocket, good ol' Shimon Peres finally could declare a victory, any victory, seizing the presidential seat and declaring, loud and clear, "we must get rid of the territories."
I know he is 84, but senility alone can't explain that kind of statement in light of recent history: the results of the Israeli withdrawal from Lebanon: a war launched by Hezbollah (and the kidnapping of IDF soldiers); Ariel Sharon's pogrom of the Jewish communities of Gaza; the residents of Sderot under daily attack by the same Arab terrorists that Peres wants to reward today in Judea and Samaria (the "West Bank" of Jordan).
Olmert declared that he would never be able to guarantee a complete cessation of rockets from Gaza into the Negev communities. Something like "if you can't take a few rockets here and there, then move somewhere else." Yes, Israel for these Labor Zionists does not include the Negev, nor the Galilee, not even Eastern Jerusalem (if any part of that city at all). Their country is Tel Aviv and its surroundings. Israeli TV, radio and other national services are tailored to please the secular, non-religious Israelis of Israel's center.
We, those who do not live within these central coastal borders, are a nuisance at best. When rockets begin hitting their precious cities and towns, this is one Jew who won't feel sorry for the consequences of their delusions. On second thought, who am I kidding? It will still hurt.
My sleepy people, when will thou wake up?
Olmert, Barak and Peres leading Israel's political arena; Manny Mazuz as Attorney General, and an Arab as director of the Jewish National Fund, which now is not aloud to favor Jews in development products. Can it get any worse?
Unfortunately, if the past is any indicator, I know the answer.
