Handling of Syria incident illustrates potential of leadership

The quiet Israeli handling of the incident in Syria -- at least as of this writing -- illustrates the sharp contrast between how Israel can manage challenges and how it so frequently mishandles them.

Not one Israeli politician -- either in the ruling coalition or the loyal opposition -- has (at least as of this writing) succumbed to the temptation to put their desire to grab a self-serving headline over the interests of the State.

Ditto for the military.

What a contrast to the extremely challenging situation in the Gaza Strip where it would be safe to say that Israel's leadership has devoted more thought and action to ensuring that their involvement in addressing this critical problem contributes to (or at least doesn't threaten) their personal political survival.

So the good news is that it appears that the Israeli actors are not only aware of how to deal with a serious challenge -- but can even put the need to do the right thing ahead of their own parochial interests.
