False messiahs of Gaza
By Doron Kescher   June 3, 2004

Well Hallelujah!

The European Union and Egyptians have agreed to join forces with Yasser Arafat and his security services to bring peace to the Levant!

And not a moment too soon - I don't think Israel could have survived another day without these parties coming to our rescue.

Let us examine the pedigree of our would-be messiahs.

According to the report in the London-based Dar al-Hayat newspaper, the Egyptians will send 250 'experts' to train the Palestinian security forces, and - in accordance with Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon's plans for Gaza - will be encouraged to assume a "greater role" in Gazan military affairs.

Yes, the Egyptians.

The same Egyptians who have done absolutely nothing to prevent hundreds of tons of weaponry and drugs and hundreds of East European women (sex-slaves) to stream from Egyptian Sinai into Gaza. The same Egyptians, who allow their tightly controlled state media to broadcast and print some of the most poisonous anti-Semitic invective since the Nazis. The same Egyptians whose military annually practices for invasions of the Sinai and who still spend billions of dollars per year preparing for war with Israel.

Yep, these are the guys that Ariel Sharon wants to invite into Gaza.

And he wants to amend the 1979 Camp David Accords with Egypt in order to achieve it. Well, he need not even bother - according to Egypt the pact is null and void anyway, as Foreign Minister Ahmad Maher told his Iranian hosts on January 6, 2004.

If one suspends their disbelief and for even a moment imagines that the Egyptians are not waging a clandestine proxy-war against Israel - which if true should automatically and immediately invalidate any claim that the Egyptians should have any role in Israel's security - why would we want these incompetent fools training the Palestinians?! What could they possibly train the Palestinians in - turning a blind eye? Cooperating with Hamas and Hizbullah? Given events since September 2000, one would think the Palestinians need little training in these fields.

Just for good measure, Sharon may like to invite the Syrians and Iranians too.

To this heavenly mix, Sharon is proposing that the European Union send a crack squad of do-gooders to Gaza. The EU would again be called upon to help train the Palestinian security forces (hmmm, this seems to imply that the Egyptians may not be up to the task...). In practical terms, this may mean that the EU taxpayers are once again asked to fund the acquisition of materiel for the reconstituted Palestinian "security" services.*

"Haven't we already done that?" the European taxpayer may ask. The answer is yes, they have. And they are being called upon to do it again because the police stations, APCs and guns purchased last time - during the Olso honeymoon (1993-1996) - have all been (mis)used to murder Israelis, and have thus either been destroyed or captured.

There is something depressingly familiar about inviting the EU to funnel poorly monitored cash into a morally and financially bankrupt society who will then use it to fund terrorism and hate, instead of education, health care or infrastructure.

To invite the EU back into the Palestinian territories one would have to overlook its de facto funding of terrorism over the last decade and its rapacious appetite for viciously criticizing Israel for any violation - real or imagined - of the Oslo Accords while paying no regard to the causal Palestinian violations and atrocities. In its conduct and even in its own polls, Europe has proved itself to be dishonest broker when it comes to the Arab-Israeli conflict. It is not only pro-Arab (no crime in itself), but manifestly anti-Jewish.

Yet, Sharon sees no problem bringing the EU back to mismanage the 'peace process'.

Finally, we come to our peace partners themselves: the Palestinian Arabs, led by a ghastly collection of terrorists. In the blue corner, we have Yasser Arafat, the inventor of modern terrorism. A man who was, remains, and always will be, a terrorist at heart. Arafat has violated every agreement, broken every promise, betrayed every trust and neglected every responsibility he has ever come across. He has done this to the Hashemites, the Syrians, the Lebanese, the Egyptians, the Europeans, the Americans and (of course) the Israelis. He simply cannot be trusted to do anything except murder Jews. There is absolutely no reason why anyone would ever agree to a process that would rehabilitate this unreformed tyrant.

His opposition in the red corner are the enormously popular Hamas and Islamic Jihad organizations, whose undisguised aim is the violent elimination of the State of Israel and its Jewish, Druze and Christian inhabitants.

The audience - the Palestinian people - cannot decide which of these Jew-killers they wish to support, yet they all agree that Israel must die. Literally.

As with the Europeans, the Palestinians too have revealed to us over the course of the last decade (or even longer, if one cares to read the not-so-fine print) their true colors. There are very, very few moderate Palestinians who genuinely want a two-state solution. The overwhelming majority of Palestinian Arabs - as is revealed regularly in their polls - want Israel eliminated. The "moderates" are happy to do this in stages through a "peace process." The "extremists" want to do this immediately through jihad.

Until the Palestinian Arabs genuinely accept a Jewish state in the Middle East, they cannot be trusted with even a water-pistol, let alone another army of 50,000 terrorists in policemen's clothing. Until that day comes, there must be only one security service between the Jordan River and the Mediterranean Sea - the Israeli army.

Inviting the Egyptians, Europeans and current Palestinian leadership to run Gaza is repeating the mistakes of Oslo - which have already cost over 1,000 Israeli lives - and making them worse. With the Israeli Army losing control over Gaza and the Egyptian border, southern Israel would be as vulnerable and as harassed as Kfar Darom or Netzarim. Which 'settlements' would we evacuate then -- Ashkelon?

Only a strong Israeli military presence in Gaza will secure southern Israel - a lesson painfully learnt in 1956, 1967 and 2000-2003. Spare us from the 'second coming' of the Egyptian, European and Palestinian messiahs.

* I use the term "security" in its broadest possible interpretation, since the Palestinian "security" services have never provided security for anyone except Yasser Arafat. Prior to using their European training to murder Jews, the Palestinian "security" services used it to terrorize and repress the Palestinians.
