How to foment civil war
By Ryan Jones   March 23, 2005

Israeli Attorney-General Menachem Mazuz strongly recommended this week that the government dish out draconian punishments to right-wing activists that block traffic as a means of protesting the coming expulsion and transfer of Jews from Gaza and northern Samaria.

His remarks came just days after those opposed to Prime Minister Ariel Sharon's "disengagement" law snarled traffic near Tel Aviv by burning tires and sitting on the highway.

When on Tuesday evening the police failed to thwart protestors from again blocking traffic in several locations, Public Security Minister Gideon Ezra publicly apologized and vowed to do a better job suppressing such disruptive, but non-violent demonstrations in the future.

It would seem that in its zeal to discredit and even silence opposition to Sharon's policies, the current leftist government is systematically sealing off all valves through which Israelis angered by plans to relinquish their biblical birthright may let off steam in a non-violent manner.

It should be noted that blocking traffic is a tactic used on numerous occasions by the leftist labor unions in the past, without legal intervention.

Instead, the government would have those faithful to the Land of Israel sidelined, causing their anger and frustration to reach boiling point.

In the meantime, elements of Sharon's government repeatedly condemn and call for legal action against any hint of anti-retreat violence, real or perceived.

But it is the government itself that is doing the most to foment any chance of violence and, God forbid, civil war by barring those opposed to its policies from democratically protesting in the loudest way possible.

This type of dictatorial behavior is what regularly causes bloody civil violence and coups in the nations that surround Israel.

It is tearing the Jewish state in two, ripping at the social fabric of a nation that has dealt with too many centuries of external hostility.

At the end of the day, the One who founded the nation of Israel will have His way, but how rough a road we take to that goal is something He usually leaves in our hands.

Our prayer at this hour must be that the Jewish nation unite in laying claim to its God-given, biblical and historical rights in this land, and in fulfilling the calling laid upon it by the Almighty.

There are enough outside forces trying to sow dissention and confusion among Israelis that they don?t need their own government doing the same.
