I was aghast to hear that the United States of America is making an offer to negotiate some sort of agreement with Iran, if Iran promises to stop their nuclear enrichment program.
Has no one at the White House ever heard of the Munich Agreement of September 29, 1939, when England and France (along with Italy and Germany) decided to give the Czech industrial heartland (Sudetenland) to Nazi Germany in an effort to buy peace?
British Prime Minister Neville Chamberlain said upon his return from this monumental sell-out of Czechoslovakia (and the word) that:
"My good friends, for the second time in our history, a British Prime Minister has returned from Germany bringing peace with honour. I believe it is peace in our time".
The reward for appeasing the Nazis was World War II (September 1, 1939), not even one year after the sell-out, when Hitler's war machine invaded Poland.
A couple of years ago, Prime Minister Ariel Sharon declared that Israel was not going to be the 21st century's version of the Munich debacle. Israel was not Czechoslovakia. And Ariel Sharon was not Neville Chamberlain.
Ariel Sharon said this because the Americans decided that Israel should surrender territory to the Palestinians in a gesture to "buy" peace.
For this public sentiment, Prime Minister Sharon was severely rebuked by President George W Bush and Condoleezza Rice.
I supported what Prime Minister Ariel Sharon said then, as I do now. And with this display of appeasement for Iran from George W Bush and Condoleezza Rice, I support Ariel Sharon's assessment even more.
It is not enough for the President of the USA to make a public statement that America will come to the aid of Israel, if Israel is ever attacked by Iran, as he did most recently during Ehud Olmert's (Israel's Prime Minister) visit to Washington.
Presidents change. Public sentiment changes. Global situations change. And most of all, commitments change. The only thing we can depend upon not changing in the scope of the world is that REALPOLITIK trumps all.
Israel can just as easily be sold down the Jordan River for a barrel of oil, as Czechoslovakia was for a whisper of hope for European peace.
As I've written consistently. It is not a question of if we will have to go to war against Iran (and maybe the entire Islamic and Arab world), but rather when.
We can make all the deals we want with the devil. But in the end, he's still the devil.
